Visit Deer Step and discover the art of creating exemplary habitats by the 2023 recipient of the Alabama Helene Mosely Award.
Deer Step boasts a thriving population of wild Alabama deer and turkeys, making it a true wildlife haven. While there exist plenty of hunting properities, we aim to involve you in our land management journey. You’ll have the opportunity to participate in various aspects of land management, including prescribed fires, the creation and maintenance of food plots and supervising our timber farms.
We proudly offer private tours of the property, offering the chance to observe wildlife up close or relish miles of hiking trails.
One of our passions at Deer step is enhancing the turkey population. a few steps we have taken since the purchase of deer step in 2015 are:
1. Habitat preservation: Ensuring that there are enough suitable habitats for turkeys to nest, roost, and forage is crucial. We focus on preserving and enhancing the existing habitats while also creating new ones. This involves planting native vegetation, managing forests to provide better cover, and creating areas with diverse food sources.
2. Predator management: Predators such as coyotes, bobcats, or foxes can affect turkey populations. Implementing predator management techniques, like trapping or hunting, in a responsible and sustainable manner helps to maintain a balanced predator-prey relationship and protect turkey nests.
3. Collaborating with wildlife organizations and other land owners. offering expert advice, resources, and potentially even assistance in monitoring and managing the turkey population.
4. Public education and involvement: Creating awareness about the importance of turkey conservation and involving the local community can go a long way in supporting the cause. Deer Step offers educational events, workshops, and bird-watching activities to engage the public and foster a sense of responsibility towards the turkey population.
